Cooking with CBD
As the number of people who choose to include CBD in their life grows, many are cooking with CBD. One of the popular ways that Cannabidiol (CBD) is being added into lives is by consuming it.  Some may purchase pre-made edible items like candies and gummies. These CBD-infused treats can be handy, portable and enjoyable for many. There are others, however, who are looking to integrate CBD in their own dishes at home. If you’re looking to include this natural compound into your dishes, here are some tips on some ways to do it.

Be sure to use quality products:

As with anything that is on the market, there are going to be higher and lower quality options to choose from. Be sure that you’re choosing to work with a reputable brand. Companies that are high-quality are transparent with their processes, open with their information and they’re not afraid to showcase their Certificates of Analysis. 

Calculate before adding.

Naturally, anyone would hate to be wasteful when it comes to such a precious natural ingredient, so measurement is essential. Start small and consider the servings you’re making in your recipe versus your usual serving amount that you, personally, enjoy. If you’re making a recipe that serves 4, for example, then you would need to add 4 servings of CBD to keep it consistent. Without considering this, too much or too little will affect the end effectiveness and enjoyment.

Best with “fatty” or oil dishes

CBD, like the 100’s of other cannabinoids in the hemp plant, is fat soluble. It works best in dishes that have a fatty, buttery or oil base. This is why salad dressings are a popular way to start infusing CBD with food. They tend to blend the earthy tones of a CBD oil well, and they are digested easily this way. Also, because dressings are cooler and don’t require heat, so they can keep the integrity of the original compound consumable. 

Control your heat

It’s very easy to degrade your CBD oil by using too much or too high of heat. When the heat gets too intense, the compounds within the oil begin to breakdown. CBD begins to evaporate when temperatures are higher than 320 degrees.  Similar to the way in which nutrients can get “cooked out” of dishes. You definitely do not want to put your CBD oil over direct heat. Think of sauces and other garnishes and gravies that your oil can blend well in. CBD oils tend to be more savory in their flavor and blend best in those types of dishes. If you would like to bake with your CBD oil, and infuse it into sweet treats like cookies, brownies or cupcakes, use an unflavored CBD oil and blend it with the butters and oils first. Be sure you start with a small batch or individual recipe.
