What Does CBD Really Do For Skin? We Asked a Dermatologist

CBD Pain Roll On for Sore Muscles
Experts often tout the virtues of SPF, retinol, and hyaluronic acid when it comes to combating fine lines, acne, and skincare. But, there's a new ingredient to add to your skincare routine — and it's found in nature.  According to Dr. Jeannette Jacknin, a board-certified dermatologist, author, national speaker, and consultant specializing in topical cannabinoids and skin disorders, CBD may offer many skin benefits, even anti-aging properties, "Because CBD is such an anti-inflammatory agent and inflammation can be responsible for aging of the skin and beyond, incorporating it into a routine could prove to be beneficial." For Dr. Jacknin, it's all about finding the right balance. So, we asked the dermatologist, Dr. Jacknin, to share her insights on using CBD in your skincare regimen.

The Science Behind Skincare & CBD

"Cannabinoid receptors have been discovered in keratinocytes, or skin cells, and other parts of the skin, such as the sebaceous glands, hair follicles, small nerves, and immune cells. CBD interacts with them as part of the skin's endocannabinoid system," explains Dr. Jacknin. "In other words, CBD may support health and beauty on multiple levels throughout the body." One study in 2007 identified that cannabinoids inhibit the overproduction of skin cells that could play a role in helping skin health.

What Effect Does CBD Have on Skin?

Dr. Jacknin shares, "There are naturally many cannabinoid receptors in the different layers and parts of the skin, which CBD interacts with. This application can help with immune regulation, epidermal growth, sebaceous glands and secretion, and irritation."  In 2014, research found that CBD behaves as a highly effective sebostatic agent. In other words, it has a positive effect on humans because it lubricates and waterproofs the skin.

What Are the Biggest Health Benefits of CBD?

Dr. Jacknin pointed out that, "One important thing to note is that CBD works differently on different people, based on our body's natural reaction."  But, when used properly, CBD may have significant health benefits. Dr. Jacknin adds, "Because CBD is such an anti-inflammatory agent and inflammation can be responsible for aging the skin and beyond, incorporating it into a routine is very beneficial."  Anti-aging benefits aren't the only boost CBD gives your skin. Dr. Jacknin states, "The anti-inflammatory properties of CBD appear to improve symptoms for many patients dramatically. Recent studies found that applying a high-quality CBD topically can improve symptoms of acne, eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, wounds, itching, and other rarer skin problems. I've seen particular efficacy for treating dry skin and fine lines, making CBD a great ingredient for all skin types. In addition to that, CBD also boasts these benefits as Dr. Jacknin adds, "CBD has also proposed benefits for those with acne scars, signs of aging, and otherwise uneven or blemished complexions. Because of the omega-3 fatty acids found in hemp, CBD can be derived. Consumers often find that their skin is beautifully moisturized and radiant when using cannabidiol-infused skincare products."

What Are the Different Types of CBD in Skincare Products?

Dr. Jacknin examples, "Medterra's Broad Spectrum tincture includes CBD plus other terpenes, good for the skin, and still THC-free. Studies for acne, eczema, psoriasis, wounds, itch, and other rarer skin problems responded positively to CBD topically. In the last few years, studies have been done on the various terpenes and their characteristics, such as their unique aromas." She moves to CBD Isolate, stating, "This means the CBD is extracted from the hemp, usually using CO2 extraction, making it 99% pure CBD. Companies like Medterra use this high-quality 99.6% CBD isolate for its US Hemp Authority certified superior products. Medterra recently took the soothing properties of Manuka Honey and combined it with many other naturals and their recognized, hemp-derived CBD to create a powerhouse topical, Manuka CBD Cream. CBD isolate is good for the skin, with most double-blind studies related to CBD in scientific medical literature being done with CBD isolate.

How Long Does It Take to Notice Benefits from CBD Skincare Products?

Dr. Jacknin states, "After application of CBD products, some have noticed visible improvements in their skin within days - feeling more hydrated and reducing any inflammation."

Here are Dr. Jacknin's CBD Skin Application Tips

Dr. Jacknin recommends, "As with any topical, apply to a small area to test for irritation before using." As with any new product you're applying to your skin for the first time, it's best to start small and adjust based on your skin's response.  She adds, "I suggest adding one drop of Medterra's CBD tincture to your regular formula and applying it to your hand, that way you can see how your skin will respond before applying it in more visible areas, like your face."  Dr. Jacknin suggests, "Medterra's CBD + Manuka Cream is great for dry skin, best used twice a day, morning and night, after showering and shaving. The cream can be applied to the full body. You can even add drops from Medterra's CBD Tinctures to essential oils for those that prefer scented products."

The Future of CBD & Skincare Is Bright

According to Dr. Jacknin, CBD in skincare is here to stay. But, it may take a different form. Dr. Jacknin explains, "Experts are developing specialized creams for acne, psoriasis, and more by incorporating additives based on the dermatological concern at hand. More research is also being done on other cannabinoids for skincare, such as CBG (cannabigerol) and CBDA (cannabidiolic acid)." If you're incorporating CBD into your skincare, choose a brand with trustworthy and reputable third party testing. Dr. Jacknin shares, "That's why I choose Medterra because they check all the boxes and have high quality, compliant products."  If you're interested in learning more about CBD for your skin and Dr. Jacknin's work, you can find more information on Dr. Jeanette Jacknin below.  Dr. Jacknin is a board-certified dermatologist, author, national speaker, and consultant, with expertise in holistic dermatology, natural cosmeceuticals, and topical hemp and cannabinoids for beauty and health.
